<div class="Standard" style="line-height: 115%;">
Are you looking for an alternative route to earning your high school diploma? For a place that will treat you as an adult? For paid internships and workshops to learn to work? Or for someone who can help you to plan your future or deal with issues making it hard to be successful with academics?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="Standard" style="line-height: 115%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="Standard" style="line-height: 115%;">
The Staten Island YABC offers students a fresh start in a small school that provides students more time with teachers and support from counselors. YABC is an environment where student learn to be accountable for their actions and responsible for their success and well-being. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="Standard" style="line-height: 115%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="Standard" style="line-height: 115%;">
The YABC class schedule is designed like a college setting where students attend school in the evening and alternate classes on Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="Standard" style="line-height: 115%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="Standard" style="line-height: 115%;">
The program offers goal-oriented counseling services. Students have the opportunity to participate in the YABC’s Learning To Work Initiative which allows them to receive work-readiness classes and be matched with paid internships designed around career interests.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="Standard" style="line-height: 115%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="Standard" style="line-height: 115%;">
Students earn an official high school diploma from the high school that transferred them into the program. (Example, If John Smith first attended Susan Wagner High School and did not finish in four years, he could be transferred to the YABC program to complete his degree and still receive his diploma from that school). <o:p></o:p></div>

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- “I don’t believe clothes make the man; I believe the man makes himself. But the clothes give the man the image, so I just like to look presentable to make sure my first impression is the best impression.”</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
That’s according to Christopher Sesay of Clifton, a 24-year-old aspiring entrepreneur, who was a beneficiary of Wednesday’s “Suit Up and Succeed.” Seven unemployed young adults received gently used or new business attire in the charitable program at a Stapleton church.</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
The concept was brought to Staten Island by Angela D’Aiuto, executive director of the <a href="http://www.westbrightonldc.com/" target="_blank">West Brighton Community Local Development Corporation (LDC)</a>, who noted “high unemployment among young people, as well as adults,” in the borough.</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
Ms. D’Aiuto partnered with local businesses, including <a href="http://www.victorystatebank.com/" target="_blank">Victory State Bank</a>, which held a two-month-long suit drive, and business owners, who donated other clothes, as well as the New York Center for Interpersonal Development’s Achievement in Career Education (ACE) program.</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
The ACE program provides business training and experience to 30 young adults, aged 16 to 24, in three annual 14-week cycles. The seven young adults who attended Wednesday were all enrolled in ACE.</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
Amy Lavelle, ACE’s business liaison, explained the program, which couples three weeks of skill-building workshops with an 11-week internship or entry-level job.</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
“After the 14 weeks are over, as long as [participants] complete the required amount of hours, then they get help from us to find either full-time employment, part-time employment, enroll in school or enlist in the military,” Ms. Lavelle added. </div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
<b style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">ASPIRING ENTREPRENEUR</b> </div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
Sesay, the aspiring entrepreneur, recently finished ACE’s skill-building workshops as part of the 14-week program and will start a paid internship Monday with Ms. D’Aiuto at the West Brighton LDC.</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
“I see myself giving back to the community. I want to help people in the community and help kids,” Sesay, who has been unemployed for two months, commented.</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
A graduate of Concord High School, Sesay enrolled in college for a semester but was forced to drop out, a result of financial constraints.</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
Sesay said he hopes one day to own his own business and his own property, but, he said, “I still need training and I still need guidance, and I hope to find that within the program.”</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
Sesay and his six classmates, four men and three women in total, had plenty to learn from the three business owners who volunteered as “personal shoppers” Wednesday afternoon.</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
One, Claire Guadagno, the owner of Handpicked Creations, a vintage resale shop in New Dorp, provided West Brighton LDC with its first major donation of business clothes.</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
“I’m very into helping women, empowering women,” Ms. Guadagno said. “I’m a single mother, who four years ago was waitressing, and now I’m ready to buy my second business.”</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
She added, “You have to believe in yourself, and you have to get around positive people.”</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
Ms. Guadagno was responsible for enlisting the support of Tottenville resident Carmela Schiano, a life coach who owns <a href="http://www.livefreecoaching.com/" target="_blank">Live Free Coaching</a>. The two of them will work together to open Total Drama, a new performing arts studio in New Dorp, later this year.</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
“I work especially with young girls without moms,” Ms. Schiano said.</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
A third local business owner, Irena Popilevsky of New Dorp, who owns <a href="http://www.realestatesiny.com/" target="_blank">Real Estate SINY</a>, agreed to bring coffee and doughnuts after she was told of the event Wednesday.</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
All three women gave fashion tips and style advice to the underprivileged young adults. </div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://media.silive.com/advance/photo/2012/08/11441214-standard.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://media.silive.com/advance/photo/2012/08/11441214-standard.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<b style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">NEW SUIT</b> </div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
Helena Simmons of New Brighton left the United Church of Praise on Sands Street with a new khaki suit that she said she would use at her internship with <a href="http://www.nhsofsi.org/" target="_blank">Neighborhood Housing Services of Staten Island</a>, where she was recently hired.</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
“I’m actually really excited about the whole thing,” she said. “I’m trying to build up my independence and be an entrepreneur, so I’m trying to open up my own business.”</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
Ms. Simmons said she would use skills acquired in the ACE program and attempt to learn new skills in advertising and marketing when she starts Monday.</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
“Depending on how well I do in my internship, there’s a possibility for me to be hired permanently.”</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
The giveaway was hosted at the <a href="http://unitedchurchint.com/" target="_blank">United Church of Praise International Ministries Church</a>, where Senior Pastor Thomas Oliver Cletus, another appropriate model for the seven young adults, played host.</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
Cletus reported this was the first time his church had partnered with the West Brighton LDC to donate clothing, but said, “Our church has clothing that we normally give out to people of low income.</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
“As I go around the community I find out that people are no longer having a job,” he said. “They try to look for another job. Sometimes they don’t have money to buy nice clothes or shoes or a tie to go for an interview.”</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
The pastor, a native of Liberia, came to the United States in 2001 by way of Nigeria.</div>
<div style="padding: 10px 0px;">
“When I got here to America, after six months, I was able to own a car, which is something I never dreamed in my life that was going to be possible,” he said.<br />

It’s easy to have tunnel vision when going through a divorce, getting wrapped up in who gets what and letting anger and despair color perceptions.</div>

But when parents get swept up in their own drama, their judgment becomes clouded and they inadvertently neglect the most important part of the equation — their children, who are likely to have the toughest time dealing with the breakup of the family.</div>

A state-run and monitored program helps divorcing/separating couples understand the devastating impact a divorce can have on kids and provide ways to diminish negative side effects.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.nycid.org/training-institute/103.html" target="_blank">Parent Assisting Children Through Transition</a>, created by the New York Center for Interpersonal Development in 2006, provides a framework for reducing conflict, strengthening parent-child relationships and fostering children’s healthy development.<br />

<br />
Acting Supreme Court Justice Barbara Panepinto, who has handled thousands of divorce cases, says she usually sends couples to the course “when there is a disagreement about parenting” — i.e., a conflict over custody and visitation or, as the courts call it today, “parental access.”</div>

Anthony Altobelli says he’s blown away with what he learned in the course, so much so that he is determined to get the word out about the benefits.<br />
<br />
“It’s an enlightening experience for anyone going through a separation,” the South Beach resident enthused.<br />
<br />
The 50-year-old father of four admits he initially was reluctant to attend, but by the end of the class he felt revitalized. Altobelli believes the program gives people a blueprint “in how to rebuild your life and move forward.”<br />

<br />
He says he also learned how he and his ex-wife can handle joint celebrations like birthdays and holidays.<br />
<br />
A Richmond mother, who wishes to remain anonymous due to the contentious nature of her divorce, says the class helped her to establish strategies to avoid conflict with her ex as well as understand what her children are going through.<br />
<br />
“I know my son is stressed,” she says, confiding lately the 5-year-old has become a bit defiant, while her 13-year-old daughter has been struggling at school.<br />

“That’s their way of acting out. They’re hurting inside,” she says. As she learned in the program, they struggle with articulating their feelings.<br />
<br />
Nancy Nybergh, an instructor of the class and a licensed psychoanalyst who works for the city Department of Education, warns that the “level of conflict [between divorcing spouses] can have a huge impact on children’s success in life.”<br />
<br />
Things like portraying a co-parent in a negative light or having heated arguments in front of the kids can have detrimental psychological effects on them.<br />
<br />
To help co-parents avoid these destructive behaviors, Ms. Nybergh teaches them how to manage their anger, recognizing their triggers and identifying techniques to cope with it.<br />
<br />
She also tries getting parents to identify with what their children may be experiencing, like believing the split somehow is their fault and wishing Mom and Dad will get back together.<br />
<br />
“Once parents are aware of these things, they usually have empathy for their children,” she says.<br />
<br />
Additionally, the course demonstrates to parents they are not alone in this difficult transition.<br />
<br />
Notes Ms. Nybergh, “It has a normalizing effect as they process the emotions that come from divorce, such as grief and loss.”</div>

<b style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">HONING COMMUNICATION SKILLS</b></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 22.200000762939453px; padding: 10px 0px;">
The psychoanalyst also works with parents in boosting their communication skills, teaching them how to paraphrase what the other person says to show they’re listening, and the importance of “I,” as opposed to “you” statements. Such as: “I get annoyed when you’re late dropping Johnny off — not “You’re always late dropping Johnny off,” which puts the other person on the defensive.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 22.200000762939453px; padding: 10px 0px;">
Altobelli says the class made him realize the importance of using these techniques, motivating him to “choose [his] words more carefully” and “think before [he] spoke.”</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 22.200000762939453px; padding: 10px 0px;">
They have been especially effective strategies with his kids, he says, noting he now understands more fully what they are experiencing.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 22.200000762939453px; padding: 10px 0px;">
“It’s amazing, the change. We communicate a lot better now,” he says, adding it has led to other positive changes.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 22.200000762939453px; padding: 10px 0px;">
“You know these things in the back of mind, but the course really hit it all home,” he concludes.</div>
