NYCID Staff Attend NYSDRA 25th Anniversary Conference

By David Ramsey, Associate Mediation Manager

Members of NYCID’s Community Dispute Resolution Center attended the 25th Anniversary Conference of the New York State Dispute Resolution Association (NYSDRA) from October 20 to 22, 2010, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Troy, New York.  NYCID is a member of NYSDRA, and our Executive Director, Dominick Brancato, is a past president of NYSDRA’s board of directors.

The theme of this year’s conference was “Rooted in Resolution.” Participants chose from a diverse array of workshops, including tracks for the “roots” (foundations of dispute resolution), “branches” (growing skill sets) and “leaves” (learning from blooming dispute resolution practices).  There were several honors and awards ceremonies for individuals who have contributed a great deal to the field of dispute resolution.

I had a wonderful bunch of learning experiences at the conference, both in the informative workshops about different aspects of mediation, and in terms of the people I met, who were doing community mediation all over New York State.  The workshops were interactive and advanced, which I liked very much.  I took workshops on building strategic alliances in transactional business mediations, managing multi-party mediation sessions and legal issues about confidentiality in mediation.  The conference helped me to be a better mediator, a more informed manager of mediation programs and a more ‘networked’ resource for the community I serve.  I appreciate the fact that NYCID supports its staff by allowing us to attend important events like these.
